Final day disappointment for 2s
Written by Faisal Anwar

And so the 2s ended their season back in div 6, against 2nd place Hawick (who had only lost 2 games all season), with both sides looking for a win to possibly boost their final league places.

Another decent side, stronger bowling that batting, the 'Rigg pitch looked green, but the outfield looked quick.

Hawick won the toss (calling heads) and given the weather forecast (thunder and persistent rain forecast from 4pm onwards) put Livi into bat - which is what Skipper Anwar would have done in the circumstances as well - either sides best chance was to bowl the other our quickly and hope the rain hold off long enough.

Neil and Kashif opened the batting this week and found the going tough, with the Hawick bowlers bowling fuller length and the pitch offering some inconsistent bounce. Livi had got to 22 off of 7 overs, before Kashif was out missing a straight one (his words) against the left armer bowling over the wicket.

Imtiaz came in at 3 and again found it hard going, with some tight bowling from Hawick.  Imtiaz was out next, to a cracking catch at first slip, with the score on 33.  Skipper Anwar came in at 4 and while Hawick were still bowling tightly, the skipper and vice-captain started to put on a partnership.

However, having done the hard work a lack of patience did for the skipper, trying to drive a full deliver back past the bowler but not getting it out of the middle of the bat, to be well caught by the tall bowler, with the score on 67.

Ahmed came in at 5, having finally found his kit, and looked good, supporting Neil.  So far the Hawick bowling had been pretty consistent every bowler bowling a nice full length and not giving too many bad balls to hit.

Unfortunately just when Ahmed was getting into his groove he told holed out for a pretty straight-forward catch with the score having moved on to 87.

VC Neil reached his fourth 50 in four games and had been the most consistent batsmen all season - great technique, showing lots of patience on what was a difficult pitch and in the face of some tight bowling.

Sushil came in at 6, fresh from his excellent innings last week, but before he and Neil could really get going Neil was caught for 55 with the score on 96.

There followed a rush of wickets with few runs added as Sushil was caught, then Mark soon followed caught and bowled (having hit a glorious drive fizzing past mid-off against another left armer, which prompted a fielding change), and then Qasim was clean bowled the score having moved on to 104 for 8.

That bought Sadhil and Jack to the crease and both batted really well, belying their age, in the face of some good bowling, showing excellent technique to keep the Hawick bowlers out, and put on another 15 runs before Sadhil unluckily caught behind on a ball that bounced a wee bit and jagged back to be caught behind.

Jack took the attack to Hawick in the final over valiantly, but was last man out clean bowled, Livi 2s all out for 121, which in the circumstances was a great effort, but probably 30 or so runs short.  To be fair Hawick bowled consistently, while livi's batsmen, bar the excellent Neil Jarvis, again lacked a little patience, with so many caught playing some injudicious shots.

Tea came and so did the rain, but it proved to be only a passing shower (when the forecast was for torrential rain) so the 2s were able to start the second half of the game.

Kashif and Ahmed opened the bowling, and bowled well, with Ahmed looking especially dangerous, and he struck first bowling their opening left hander with an inswinger that took his leg stump, in the second over of the game with the score on 4.

That was the last breakthrough in the opening spell, though both beat the bat regularly, the Hawick batsmen were taking no chances and showing a lot more patience.

Neil and Sushil came on second change, and it was Sushil that got the next wicket, with an excellent catch by Ahmed, withe score on 28 after 11 overs. However that was the last breakthrough for 21 overs as the pitch offered little to the bowlers and the batsman were being patient.

Skipper Anwar and Imtiaz came on, and continued to bowl tightly, but even he change in pace did nothing to halt the slow stroll to victory.  Skipper Anwar in need of a wicket bought on his striker bowlers again, and kashif almost got the breakthrough needed, but the skipper misjudged the flight of a skier, and the chance was missed.

Kashif finally got his man in his final over, as the Skipper this time held on to another skier, but the score had moved onto 106 by this stage.  And then Kashif struck in his next ball, inducing the opening batsman to finally edge a lovely away swinger, gratefully snaffled by Gordon behind.

With the game ebbing away the skipper turned to Sadhil and Jack to try their best, and Sadhil would have had 2 wickets had the skipper held on to a lobby at mid-on and had Dad Sushil held on to a top edge which looped up and behind to fine leg, but neither catch stuck and the game was finally won in the 35th over.

In the end the better team did win - that cannot be denied, but there was definitely some positives for the 2s, with another excellent batting display from Neil, and an excellent end to the inning from Sadhil and Jack, and some excellent bowling from all the bowlers.

Looking to the future the Hawick team are a great example of a youthful team with a few sage heads, that we as a club should be looking to emulate ourselves, and given the crop of excellent youngsters at the club, we have an excellent chance of doing just that.

What a difference a season makes - availability has been much improved, though still an issue.  The 2s can be proud of their efforts over the whole season, finishing in a very creditable 4th place, and if this team can be maintained and built upon, stand a good chance of doing well next year.
