After some disappointing performances against Edinburgh South, Falkland II & SMRH II, especially from the batting unit, the 1st XI were back in the points against mid table RHC II. During this period Livingston have also failed to progress in the Active Edinburgh Trophy but have progressed to the Semi Final of the Active Edinburgh Plate competition.
It was a must win game for Livingston on Saturday having dropped to 8th in the Division, one place above the relegation places. Jazim Sohail lost the toss and was put into bat on a very good looking wicket. Navid Asghar was promoted in the order to open with Bobby Bowering and proceeded to hold the innings together in the first 20 overs. He lost Bobby, Soby Asghar and Jazim along the way so the innings was in the balance at the half way mark at around 60-3. This is when Greg Murdoch proceeded to take control and the much vaunted middle order began to show what it could do. Navid was out for a score in the low 30s and Greg upped the scoring rate ultimately being caught for 61, having a very good partnership with Jim Wilson. By the 30th over the score had been pushed onto approx. 120.
There then proceeded to be a mini collapse, Jim was run out and Travis Chandler was caught behind, however Adarsh Brar then took control and marshalled the tail only getting out in the last over having scored over 40. Livingston had posted a competitive 203-9 in their 40 overs.
Knowing the job was only half done, it needed a good response in the field. RHC II got off to a similar start to Livingston with a solid but slowish opening stand, although they didn’t lose the wickets up front. Adarsh and Naveen Subhanaboina bowled good opening spells, however it wasn’t until Alan McDonald and more impressively Greg came on that wickets began to fall. It wasn’t Alan’s best spell but he did make the breakthrough. Greg though found the way of applying pressure and ultimately it paid dividends. His first wicket accounted for the other opener with a really good off cutter and his 2nd & 3rd wickets were both excellent catches behind by Jazim, the first he took at the second attempt. Even allowing for this at the half way mark RHC II were in a similar position to Livingston so we knew it only needed one good innings and the match could be lost.
Jazim though had played a masterstroke, he had kept back all of Travis’s 8 overs to be bowled in the last 15. RHC II knew they were beat when all of a sudden they were facing our key strike bowler towards the end and they began to struggle with his pace on a fairly quick wicket. The boundaries were being protected at this stage and whilst the batsmen were surviving they could not keep up with the run rate. Ultimately falling well short on 153-7.
It was a definitely improved performance from the 1s which moves them up a place to 7th on 61%, one place above St Boswells on 60% and next weeks opponents.
