Kingfishers Blow Victory in Last Over Despair
Written by Administrator
Livingston stumbled to a narrow 1 wicket defeat at Dresselrigg to 10 man Freuchie as they failed to defend a high score on a warm sunny afternoon in front of a decent crowd. Skipper Lang lost the toss (again!) and Livingston were inserted on a decent track with a quick outfield.

From the outset, the Kingfishers approached the match with all the positivity that was missing last week at Heriots, although quickly tumbled to 20 for 3 as both Mukhtar Ahmed and Navid Asghar managed to play onto their own stumps. Crichton and Feraz Asghar recoverd the innings a little, but the critical partnership was acheived by Kirk and Iain Murdoch. They added a club record 91 for the 5th wicket in good time. Livingston completed their 50 overs with the score on 228 for 9, with Kirk Crichton completing his maiden club hundred finally being dismissed for 111.

Perhaps there was a certain degree of complacency, especially since that was the 2nd highest score scored by Livi at their Dresselrigg ground and the 5th highest score ever at the ground. Perhaps we were unprepared for the way in which Freuchie and Cowan in particular cam out the blocks as the Fifers raced to 100 inside 12 overs. The intrduction of Jim Wilson slowed the scoring down, but a crucial turning point occured when Ian Thomsons throe from long off hit the keepers stumps direct with Cowan looking to be half a yard short of his ground. Square Leg umpire gave the batsmen not out and Cowan continued on his devastating innings going past 50 before holing out to Thomson off Wilson for a brutally aggressive match winning innings. Wickets fell regularily as Trevidi tried his best to take Freuchie over the line. The crucial 7th wicket partnership with Brown, despite numerous run out chances being squandered before one was taken meant that Freuchie needed 9 off the last two overs with 2 wickets in hand. That came down to 3 off the last with 1 wicket in hand, and despite some crazy running which could have (and should) have resulted in run outs off the 2nd and 3rd balls, Freuchie sneaked home, Trevidi finishing on 51*. In the face of the onslaught, Jim Wilsons figures of 3 for 15 of 10 were stunningly impressive and a testament to line, length and pace variation.

So defeat in a game we should have won was difficult to take, but in the cold light of day, there are many lessons we can learn. Our fielding needs to be sharper and more committed and the bowlers should now know the importance of varying their length and pace in the face of continual aggressive batting. At least we should never lose another game in similar style.....well at least not till the next day when again at Dresselrigg we failed to defend 234 for 4 (140 partnership between Kirk Crichton,78 and Colin Heaney, 82*) as MUFs blasted their way to victory scoring the last 135 runs inside 12 overs!! Deja Vu.
