Cheaney's Mythical Bowling
Written by Administrator
Regular readers may well remember the mystical '7 for 16' that Colin Heaney once claimed he took in a hitherto mythical world that only he belonged???   Well, fear not Cheaney old bean. Thanks to some scrabbling around in the attic and clubhouse by Phil Dickson more 2nd XI details have been found. Basic details from 1985 and 1986, plus full details from 1987 have found their way into the records.

This has obviously resulted in many changes to 2nd XI records also resulting in one or two of the current crop of 2nd XI players being usurped from their (false) positions at the top.
Colin Heaney

On the team front the mid 80s was not a strong 2nd XI period. The 3 lowest teams scores were recorded in 1985, 86 and 87 with the highlight (lowlight) being bundled out for 14 by Dunnikier in 1985. In 1987 there were THREE CONSECUTIVE 10 wicket defeats in the league and one more 10 wicket defeat in an end of season friendly. Surprisingly in amongst the doom and gloom Mitre were dismissed for a record breaking 17 in 1987 and the current record 1st wicket partnership was achieved, knocking the current Skipper off the top. Jim Hendrie (68*) and Keith Barlow (63*) put on an undefeated 154 for the opening wicket against Kirkbrae in 1985.

On the individual front, the opponents of Gerry Toms 100* in 1986 was identified as Westquarter, whilst there were many more records added in the bowling front. The aforementioned Cheaney's '7 for 16' turned out to be 7 for 23, against Fauldhouse in 1987. Cheaney also recorded 6 for 5 the same season as he took 31 season wickets and shot to second in the list of most wickets in a season. Derek Hannah's 25 wickets in 1985 were good enough for 4th spot. Roddy Mackays record breaking 7 for 13 this season in fact turned out not to be record breaking, failing to knock Paul Sefton's 8 for 17 against Falkland II in a low scoring game in 1987.

In terms of career totals, the addition of the records found has seen both Neil Gorman (116) and Colin Heaney (106) go to 1 and 2 in the most career wickets section, displacing the pretender Faisal Anwar!  Cheaney is the only man in LCC records to take 100 wickets for both the 1st XI and the 2nd XI.  On the batting front Hamayun Ahmad sneaked past the 1000 runs barrier. I have also updated the covering page for 2nd XI records indicating the data that exists and does not exist, as well as updating the 1985 and 1987 batting and bowling averages.

Here's to finding the next set of records........
