Where Are They Now 2? - John Duncan
Written by Administrator

Never in the history of the club has a title for an article been so apt. John Duncan, erstwhile cricketer and sometime politician. If you google him you come across a page that has a list of candidates for the Ayr Constituency in the 2007 Scottish Parliament Election, and describes JD as the "Invisible Man in this contest" !!   Now those of you who paraded around Bangour and Dresselrigg with JD will be very quick to point out that there is no way that you could describe JD as invisible on a cricket field (or anywhere else for that matter). Even if those people hard of sight couldn't see his growing bulk, they most definately would have heard him!!  A master of the slighlty less than subtle comment to opposition batsmen, bowlers, fielders, umpires etc etc .

On the field he was combatative and gave his all in every way. He battered opposition bowlers all around the park, including a quite magnificent mauling of Inverurie in the Small Clubs Cup as JD made the first of his 3 club centuries. A talented all rounder, who not only bowled some nice turn and tweakers, but was equally adept behind the timbers with the gloves on.  First and foremost though he was a batsman ending his career as the 3rd highest run scorer in the clubs's history.

JD's political ambitions off the field took a toll on his appearences, firstly as right hand man for Robin Cook, then as right hand man for Jim Devine. Fortunately for JD he got away to stand as his own man before the expenses scandal of recent years (but there is growing evidence to suggest that JD did eat all the pies....). Clearly he took his role as the Invisible man seriously and failed to win the seat.  Since then JD has all but disappeared off the face of the earth, apart from the odd mention in random quango's. JD, come back. The Bar needs you too!

His altercation with a Holy X player about backing up and the subsequent melee in the changing rooms is something that makes me laugh to this day

When Jum used to have a run up and bowled quite "sharp". Playing Haddington a helmeted JD fielding under the batsmens (rabbit) nose clapped his hands and shouted to Jum
"thats the way Jim get it right in aboot his heed"
Much jostling ensued. The good old days

Fantastic article, what a guy JD is. He is mentioned in my profile under funniest moment for a dropped catch but John was a seriously good cricketer. After he stopped cricket he was also an impressive golfer, losing out in the Championship final at Royal Binny (to a much less talented guy) ;-) . He used to hit a 284 yard par 4 with a mid-iron on occasion. Cheaney will know him as a rugby man too, apparently he was a bit mental? Just a shame Jim Devine wasn't rumbled earlier (John was on the hustings for Robin Cook's job), that said given the quality of his ideas at committee meets Livingston would be a wasteland by now.
