It was a day of records when a slightly weakened 1st XI visited struggling Broomhall in week 8 of the league season.
The highest club team score was achieved 388-7 in 45 overs, beating the previous best by 16 runs. The club have achieved scores of over 300 on only 4 previous occasions, all since 2010. The previous record having been achieved in 2013.
In that previous game in 2013 Jazim Sohail set the best individual score by a club player 178*. Yesterday Fahad Ahmed not only beat that but went on to score the first double century for the club, carrying his bat for 211*. In the whole innings he only offered one chance!
Both Fahad and Jazim have come through our club junior ranks.
The team were in trouble yesterday at 5-2 and then 55-3 when Fahad was joined by Greg Murdoch. Greg and Fahad then took the opposition apart and it was a surprise when Greg was superbly caught having fallen just short of his maiden 100 on 96 and having put on 190 for the 4th wicket. The 5th best partnership, however Jazim and Sohaib Asghar still retain the best 4th wicket partnership record of 208.
Once Greg departed, Fahad was well supported by Simon Lancaster (29) and Alan McDonald (9) both of whom were run
out in the chase for the aforementioned records. We are not sure if Fahad has also achieved an unwanted record of being involved in 3 run outs in the same innings and the second time this season his brother, Hamad has fallen to a run out involving the 2 of them.
In reply everything was a little frenetic. Zeeshan was bowling as quickly as we have seen him, albeit losing a little of his normal accuracy and Simon was sprawling all over the place behind the stumps. The Broomhall opener took a T20 approach, however he was soon caught behind off the bowling of Hamad (1-49). It was apparent that it wasn't going to be easy to get wickets as the Broomhall top order put up some good resistance. It wasn't until Alan McDonald was introduced to the attack that we managed to control the run rate. Alan bowled his full 9 overs taking 3-12 in what was a bit of a run fest.
The seamers at the other end were having a tougher time, but did manage to keep it relatively tight. Once Alan had been bowled out Ruan Erasmus came on to bowl his wrist spin and started to take wickets (3-20). Broomhall were now 7 down and Amir Raza making his 1st XI debut was brought on to bowl his leg spin and immediately impressed finishing with figures of 3-5. Broomhall were dismissed for 213 and Livingston took maximum points maintaining 2nd place in the division and scheduled to play the leaders next weekend at the Turpie & Co Sports Ground.
