2nd XI Return Triumphant
Written by Faisal Anwar
The Kingfishers’ second string completed a great weekend for the club with a good win against fourth placed Holy Cross 3’s at a sunny Campbell Park, continuing their late push for a promotion place in Division 7.

With the sun shining, a dry and firm pitch which looked like it might offer something to the bowlers, a swirling wind, and the customary short boundary, the Kingfishers lost the toss and were invited to bat.

Some excellent hitting early on saw the Kingfishers off to a flying start, with Richard ‘Slippers’ Hodgson looking in good form before being unluckily caught low at mid off. The HC bowlers wrestled back the initiative and began to tie the Kingfishers down, helped by a slow pitch with variable low bounce and more than the odd shooting delivery. However thanks to some lusty blows from Andy ‘Buckets’ Bell, who hit the longest 6 of the day, and then a quick fire fifth wicket partnership of 57 between Brodie ‘how do you play this game again?’ Leggett and the in form Faisal ‘SpinKing’ Anwar saw the Kingfishers post their highest batting total of the season, finishing on 157-9 from their 45 overs, with the SpinKing top scoring with a well timed 34, following up his 29 not out against Dunfermline. According to HC 150 was par for the course at Campbell Park, but given how the pitch was playing, 157 certainly looked like defendable.

A tight spell of bowling soon restricted the HC reply, with Roddy ‘Dead-eye’ Mackay, and  Hodgson bowling well. A much needed drinks break was taken at the half way stage with HC needing over 4 runs an over to win, with the run rate slowly creeping up, but they did have 9 wickets in hand. After much discussion during the drinks break, Skipper, Paul Hammersley soon turned to the SpinKing, with the game finely poised and in hindsight that turned the match. A combination of a pitch offering turn, some good line and length bowling and the HC batsmen needing to up the run rate soon saw the wickets start to tumble. The SpinKing bowling in tandem with the Skipper saw the Kingfishers home in the end, HC finishing 105 all out from 39 overs, the Kingfishers winning by 52 runs. Man of the match for the Kingfishers was the SpinKing finishing with 5-16 off his 7 overs, ably assisted by the Skipper, who before the match was the leagues top wicket taker, finishing with 4-16, and Sohaib Asghar proving the old cliché that catches win matches, with 4 good catches.

The game was played in excellent spirits as is always the case with HC and with three games to go, weather permitting, there is still all to play for as the Kingfishers fight all the way for promotion from Div 7 in a topsy-turvy season.
