A little delayed after the badly times showers of late, Livingston's 1s enjoyed their first 2008 win on Tuesday.
It turned out to be a close finish, in this first round clash in the new Cow Corner 20-20 Cup.
Chasing 104 to win, Livingston only reached the target from the very last ball securing the single needed for victory. Key to the chase was Salman Aslam, top-scoring with 43 after reaching the crease with Livi 32 for 2. This in partnership firstly with Kirk Crichton (23) and then with Mark Collings to within 4 runs of victory. With tight bowling from the visitors, and in the darkening conditions, Livi struggled to get bat on ball at times which made for the tense finish.
In truth Livingston made the chase a little tighter than it should have been, as earlier there was a pleasingly solid performance in the field. Wickets fell at regular intervals in the Boroughmuir innings, restricting the total. Andrew Wilcock took the last visitor's wicket with the last ball of the innings, stumped by Stuart Lang. Salman Aslam was the main wicket taker, returning a fine 4 for 15 from his 4 overs.
Again it was pleasing to enjoy good spirit between the teams on the field, especially in the last tense over when heads were being scratched as to the ruling for a catch off Mark Colling's skied shot as Livi scampered a single, no-ball signalled. Unfortunately our resident umpire Roddy Mackay was not available for a referral, but happily common sense prevailed.
Another win in the competition in Round 2 will see Livingston through to the inaugural 20-20 finals day.
