Dunnikier Withdraw from ESCA |

Division 3 Opponents Dunnikier CC have, due to falling playing numbers, withdrawn from ESCA for season 2010 with immediate effect. Fortunately it is not the demise of the club as they intend to try to play in the Forth Cricket Union.
ESCA have decided NOT to restructure the leagues, so there will only be 16 League games for Division 3 teams.....
It does however issue a strong reminder of how clubs can be affected by player movement and commitment and how the players have a responsibility to 'their' club as well as to themselves.
Coincidentally, a book on the history of Kirkcaldy Cricket Club has just been published. They were East League champions in 1984 (before the national leagues, so they were playing Grange, Carlton, Heriots etc and is quite an achievement) and went under only 20 years later...... Neil Drysdale comments on the demise
"So what went wrong? The book tries to account for what really is a bit of a mystery, but it certainly resulted in a stream of talented cricketers leaving the Club until they were reduced to simply not having a team. One gets the picture of a small number of extremely committed Committee Members, including a master sponsorship convener in Ian Alexander, battling to keep a group of players who were unwilling or unable to make the same commitment to the Club. The book mentions some players being reluctant to pay subscriptions, a sad state of affairs which has affected many clubs in the modern era.
Other clubs could boast a good social scene with considerable bar income to support club finances. Kirkcaldy did not have this asset and it undoubtedly also played a part in their demise. A great club quickly disappeared."
One or two comments in there are pretty close to home at Livingston....... We don;t want to be next do we?
